Galvanised or painted: ask for the twenty-year number

Within a kilometre of the coast you are in a C4 environment or worse, and a painted system there needs maintenance access, a maintenance budget and somebody who remembers. Hot-dip galvanising costs more on day one. On a building you intend to own for thirty years it is usually cheaper by year twelve, and it removes the touch-up crew after erection, which is a week of programme nobody prices. Ask your fabricator for both numbers over the design life. If they will only give you the up-front one, that tells you something.
