WHY WE DETAIL OUR OWN STEEL

It costs us four salaries. It is also the only reason connections fit the first time they are lifted.

Most fabricators send detailing to a bureau, often offshore. It is genuinely cheaper per tonne and it is where a lot of steel jobs quietly go wrong. A connection detail is a conversation: the engineer wants one thing, the workshop can build another, and the erection crew has to be able to bolt it up at height. When those three people are in three timezones, the conversation becomes an RFI and the RFI becomes a week. Ours are down one corridor. That is the whole argument, and it is why we hold a delivery date when the drawings change.
